Build custom terrain with editable tools.

Heightmap Studio is an intuitive terrain and track creation tool designed to generate seamless, high-fidelity 16-bit heightmaps for any modern game engine. While engineered to handle the brutal, micro-precise physics tracking of simulators like MX Bikes, its robust toolset is universally compatible with any engine that utilizes grayscale heightfields.

Projects save as .hm files. Legacy .rutforge projects still open.

Heightmap Studio editor overview
Terrain and track tools

Start from terrain, then shape the racing line.

Heightmap Studio keeps major edits re-editable, so you can keep tuning the base ground, track lane, jumps, ruts, bumps, and textures without starting over.

Terrain

Generate a completely customizable, rideable starting landscape at real-world scale, or import a standard 1025 px or 2049 px heightmap as the base for your project.

  • Seeded terrain presets for flat pads, rolling hills, and rougher bases
  • Meter-based horizontal and vertical scale controls
  • Commit generated terrain to unlock track, jump, rut, bump, and texture work

Track Path

Draw the main racing line with a pen-style spline, as it carves a clean lane that follows the terrain and blends into the surrounding ground.

  • Track width, cut depth, edge banking, and elevation smoothing
  • Start funnel support that snaps to the track
  • Designed around real map dimensions, not arbitrary pixels

Jumps

Drag and drop your jumps directly onto your path, wherever you want them! Jumps will snap, rotate, and blend with the track. Adjust each jump after placement or customize its curve template from the library.

  • Full precision editing for every single jump
  • Create and reuse custom jump profiles with the template editor
  • Non-destructive jump layers can be adjusted or replaced at any time

Ruts & Bumps

Carve custom shaped ruts and scatter braking bumps wherever you want them. Use pen-style curves or freehand drawing to lay single or multi-rut berms, and place bump patterns to create rough braking zones.

  • Depth, width, berm height, sharpness, and cross-section controls
  • Multi-rut spreads multiple ruts in the same corner
  • Stamp bumps individually or scatter them wherever you want

Textures

Import your own repeating texture layers to seamlessly follow the path of your track. Align them to the track or start, preview them over the heightmap, mask them, and export a transparent texture map in whatever resolution you desire.

  • Up to five editable image layers with order, opacity, repeat, width, and offset controls
  • Track and start path targeting for surface placement
  • Transparent PNG export for generating your own high-quality texture masks
  • Bake your textures directly to your heightmap for added texture

Editing workflow

Everything is built for iteration.

Use the app like a track-building workbench: sketch, preview, tune, hide, reorder, save, reopen, and export when the shape is ready.

Layers and groups

Every rut, bump, jump, and texture layer can be selected, renamed, hidden, grouped, reordered, or deleted without flattening the project.

Smooth and mask tools

Blend rough spots, soften edits, and mask layer effects with brush controls that stay aligned with the same save and undo model.

Reference overlay

Load a map, sketch, or texture reference over the canvas for tracing. It stays visual only and never changes the exported heightmap.

3D preview

Inspect the terrain in a live Three.js view with slope shading and display-only vertical exaggeration for easier shape checks.

Presets

Save reusable rut, bump, terrain, track, and jump settings so proven shapes can move between projects instead of being rebuilt.

Project files

Save work as a single .hm project file with the original heightmap, layers, textures, jumps, groups, and settings intact.

16-bit export

Export full-resolution grayscale terrain PNGs, transparent edge masks, texture maps, and other outputs for game-engine use.

Commercial licensing

Personal use is free. Commercial track releases, commissions, paid packs, studio work, and monetized projects require a license.
